Into the Sublime
I am a member of the John Muir Trust and believe in Thoreau’s maxim that ‘in wildness is the preservation of the world’. Now that I have five grandchildren I feel particularly strongly about what is happening to the planet. I am not a climatologist or an environmentalist. I just want to be part of the conversation.

Wastwater
Recent natural catastrophes and increasingly dire warnings about global warming have reawakened fears about the earth’s vulnerability. It seems to me that it is Wastwater in Cumbria, with its dramatic evidence of glaciation and its brooding depths of water, which most obviously informs a contemporary version of dark romanticism.
